According to the inauguration stone placed on the building of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court in Gurdaspur, the court was inaugurated on 11th December 1926 by the Hon’ble Sir Shadi Lal, Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.
Gurdaspur found its origins in the early 17th century when it was established by Guriya Ji, after whom the city was named. Guriya Ji, a Sanwal Brahmin belonging to the Kaushal Gotra, purchased land for Gurdaspur from the Jats of Sangi Gotra. Historical records suggest that some people resided in huts in the old city. Guriya Ji hailed from the village of Paniar, situated 5 miles north of Gurdaspur, and his ancestors migrated from Ayodhya to settle in Paniar.
The district’s ancient history is shrouded in mystery, with only a few relics such as the rock temples at Mukheshwar providing glimpses into its past. Gurdaspur was also a significant location in the conquests of Alexander the Great, who battled the Kathaians near Sangala.
The district witnessed significant shifts in power with the decline of Mughal rule and the rise of Sikh influence. Several Sikh Gurus, including Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Hargobind Ji, had connections to the region. Banda Bahadur, a disciple of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, used Gurdaspur as a base for his raids.
During the partition of India in 1947, Gurdaspur’s fate remained uncertain for some time due to its predominantly Muslim population. Ultimately, as per the Redcliffe Awards, only the Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district was transferred to Pakistan, while the remainder became part of India. This led to a significant migration of populations, with Muslims moving to Pakistan and Hindus and Sikhs from Sialkot and Tehsil Shakargarh settling in Gurdaspur.
